About Platinum

Platinum (Pt) is a dense, silvery-white precious metal that is roughly 30 times rarer than gold. All the platinum ever mined would barely fill a small living room — about 10,000 tonnes — and almost 75% of new supply comes from a single country, South Africa.

Its combination of extreme corrosion resistance, a melting point above 1,768 °C, and unmatched catalytic activity for hydrogen reactions makes platinum the backbone of diesel catalytic converters and the emerging green-hydrogen economy (PEM electrolysers and fuel cells).

For bridal jewelry, platinum is valued for being naturally white (no rhodium plating required) and hypoallergenic. Track its live spot price, compare with the gold price, and use the price calculator for the per-gram value in your local currency.

Main uses

  • Diesel catalytic converters (largest industrial demand)
  • PEM hydrogen fuel cells and green-hydrogen electrolysers
  • High-end bridal jewelry (PT950 / PT900)
  • Investment bars and coins (Maple Leaf, American Eagle)
  • Laboratory crucibles, medical implants and cancer drugs
Purity standards

Investment platinum is 9995 fine. Bridal jewelry is most often hallmarked PT950 (95% Pt) or PT900. Use the karat / fineness calculator to convert spot to per-gram for each fineness.
