About Gold
Gold (chemical symbol Au, from Latin aurum) is the oldest monetary metal we know of. Coins of nearly pure gold were struck in Lydia almost 2,700 years ago, and central banks still hold more than 35,000 tonnes of it today as a strategic reserve.
What sets gold apart is a rare combination: it is extremely dense (19.3 g/cm³), practically immune to corrosion, and soft enough to be hammered into a leaf just 100 nanometres thick. A single gram can be drawn into a wire over 2 km long, which explains why it still turns up inside high-reliability electronics.
