How is gold zakat calculated?

Zakat is due on gold once your holdings reach the Shariah nisab of 85 g of pure gold (equivalent to 20 gold dinars) and a full Hijri year has passed. According to the majority of scholars, even gold jewellery worn for personal use is subject to zakat when it meets the nisab.

The value is taken at the gold price on the day zakat is paid, not the day of purchase. The amount due is 2.5% (a quarter of a tenth) of the pure-gold value.

Different karats are converted to pure gold by multiplying weight by purity: 24K = 99.9%, 22K = 91.6%, 21K = 87.5%, 18K = 75%.

The formula in short

  • Pure gold = Σ (weight × karat purity)
  • Gold value = pure gold × today's price per gram in your currency
  • Zakat = value × 2.5%

Why is the nisab 85 grams of gold?

The Prophet ﷺ set the nisab of gold at 20 dinars. A gold dinar weighs roughly 4.25 g of pure gold, so 20 × 4.25 = 85 g. This is the threshold contemporary jurists use for zakat on gold and its monetary equivalents.

Calculating zakat across karats (24K, 22K, 21K, 18K)

Convert each holding to pure gold using its purity: 24K (99.9%), 22K (91.6%), 21K (87.5%), 18K (75%), 14K (58.3%). Sum the pure-gold weights, compare with 85 g, then multiply the value at today's price by 2.5% if nisab is reached.

Zakat on worn jewellery

Scholars differ on jewellery worn by women. The Hanafi school requires zakat unconditionally; the majority exempt it unless intended for hoarding or trade. Paying it is the more cautious view, especially when nisab is clearly exceeded.

When and how to pay gold zakat

Pay after a full Hijri year over your nisab. Many prefer Ramadan for the multiplied reward. You may pay in gold of the same kind or in cash to the eight categories of recipients listed in Surah At-Tawbah (verse 60).
