About Nickel
Nickel (Ni) is a silvery, ferromagnetic transition metal first isolated by Axel Cronstedt in 1751. Indonesia and the Philippines now dominate world output, supplying over half of the global mined nickel that feeds two very different markets โ stainless steel and EV batteries.
About 70% of nickel still goes into stainless-steel production (it is the "8" in 18/8 stainless), but Class 1 high-purity nickel for nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) lithium-ion batteries is the fastest-growing segment, driven by long-range electric vehicles.
Check the live nickel spot price per tonne and watch the spread against copper as a barometer of EV-supply-chain demand.
Main uses
- Stainless steel and corrosion-resistant alloys (Inconel, Monel)
- Lithium-ion EV batteries (NCM 811, NCA chemistries)
- Rechargeable NiMH batteries and coin metal
- Electroplating and decorative finishes
- Aerospace superalloys for jet-engine hot sections
LME-deliverable Class 1 nickel is 99.80% minimum (briquettes, cathodes). Battery-grade nickel sulphate is refined from Class 1. Class 2 (ferronickel, nickel pig iron) is used for stainless steel and is NOT battery-suitable.
