Industrial metals are quoted on exchanges in tonnes or in cents per pound, which is convenient for traders and useless for a fabricator pricing a job. Quoting in the wrong unit is one of the most common sources of costly errors in metal procurement. A factor-of-1,000 slip between grams and kilograms, or between kilograms and tonnes, survives surprisingly far into a purchase order before anyone notices.
