About Zinc
Zinc (Zn) is a bluish-white metal that has been alloyed with copper to make brass since ancient Roman times, but its modern importance comes from a much quieter role: protecting steel from rust. Roughly half of all zinc mined every year is used for galvanizing.
A thin zinc coating extends the life of steel structures, car bodies and infrastructure by 30 years or more, because zinc sacrifices itself to corrosion before iron does (sacrificial anode protection). Zinc is also an essential micronutrient โ the human body cannot store it and must obtain it daily from food.

Main uses
- Galvanizing steel against corrosion (about 50% of demand)
- Brass and bronze alloys (with copper)
- Die-cast automotive parts and hardware
- Zinc-air and alkaline batteries
- Sunscreens (ZnO), agricultural fertilizers, dietary supplements
LME-deliverable Special High Grade (SHG) zinc is 99.995% pure. High Grade is 99.95%. Brass typically combines 60โ70% copper with 30โ40% zinc; nickel silver adds nickel and contains no actual silver.
